Hobbit Highlights
Below are some suggestions and recommmendations. Some of the best experiences we have had on our visits down there. This is a work in progress and we will continue to add to this list, so if you have any picks that you feel should be included please e-mail your suggestions to us.
Getting Here
Allow for 3 hours from Sydney, although if the traffic is obliging it can be done in 2 ½ hours. Although, a word to the wise, the Princes Highway is peppered with speed cameras, so resist the temptation.
To break up the journey there are several stops to break-up the journey, here are a few suggestions;
If travelling from Sydney after work a great stop for a bite to eat and cleansing ale is the Berry Inn (not suprisingly in Berry), you will have been on the road for about 2 hours, so a timely stop. It’s a great pub with terrific food in the courtyard.
If travelling through the day there is a scenic drive through the Royal National Park along the
Grand Pacific Drive.
Try and find time for a beer at the Scarborough Pub, this has to be amongst the best pubs in NSW.
An alternative route back to Sydney is through Kangaroo Valley, about 40 minutes from Sanctuary Point. The Friendly Inn is a great pub. There is a great restaurant at the back and seating outside with excellent views. For the swingers amongst us, combine this with a game of golf at
Kangaroo Valley Golf & Country Resort
for a near perfect Sunday.
Beaches
Check out the serenity at Murrays’ Beach in Booderee National Park. It’s a bobby dazzler; calm, crystal clear waters, great snorkelling and a great beach to relax and take it easy. If you are feeling not too lazy there is a 5km loop walk around Governors Head with great views across the bay.
Cave Beach also in the National Park is an ocean beach and is great for a splash about in the waves, those who can, could surf. It’s massive so you can kick a football or wield your willow without upsetting the neighbours.
Greenfields Beach is the complete beach; beautiful white sand and clear waters, gentle waves for a comfortable body surf and good snorkelling.
Hyams Beach – it boasts the whitest sand in Oz, you can judge for yourself. Whatever, it is quite spectacular and often dolphins make an appearance. Also, you can get a nice brekkie and/or lunch at the general store.
Activities
If you are feeling energetic before breakfast there is a great run from the Villa down to Paradise Beach along the banks of St George Basin to Palm Beach then back up Frederick St, it’s approximately 6km.
Kayaking
Kayaking in Kangaroo Valley. A great way to spend an afternoon is hiring a canoe or kayak and paddling down the Kangaroo river. Great fun and good exercise. We recommend these guys,
Kangaroo Valley Escapes.
Whale Watching
Jervis Bay provides some of the best whale watching along the east coast of Australia. The season runs from May to November. Apparently last season was the best ever in terms of whale sightings and this year is expected to be even better. All guests at Hobbit Haven can take advantage of a 10% discount with one of the premier cruise companies in Jervis Bay -

Golf
There can’t be many better 9-hole courses than at
St Georges Basin Country Club
, play in the late afternoon when along with the traditional hazards of the rough, bunkers and water, you also have the numerous kangaroos that loaf around the course to contend with.
As previously mentioned the
Kangaroo Valley Golf & Country Resort
is a brilliant course, an absolutely beautiful setting and a challenging course.
A 40 minute drive south brings you to Mollymook. Where there is a fantastic beach and a couple of golf courses. Our pick is the 18-hole hilltop course
Mollymook Golf Club
. This is a very picturesque golf course but with challenging holes. Use this link to get a discount on your green fees -

Restaurants
Gunyah Restaurant
within Paper Bark Camp offers a fairly unique dining experience set amongst the bush. The food is exceptional. However, due to it’s popularity it gets very busy, so booking in advance is essential and be prepared for service a little slower than what you might be used to.
